Default Lemon Glazed Cupcake

Lemon Glazed

Nikon D5000
50mm Nikkor reversed
1/60s
ISO 400
Aperture Unknown

This is a shot of my aunt's cupcake. I took the shot the minute it came out of the oven.

Do you like the colors? Do you think I should have gone for a deeper depth of field? How do you like my composition over all?

Thanks
H.S.

Hi, Qanths

I have to like it because most of my Macros have shallow DoF, and for something hot from the oven, the blur could suggest the steamy freshness emanating from the cupcake. The composition leaves little question as to what is the subject, and frankly it moves me to go chase down a snack.

Hi, that drop of glaze is lovely. I like the composition and colours but yes, I find the DOF a bit too shallow. IMO another half an inch in focus in front would have been great. And maybe I'd make it a bit brighter...

The cupcake looks tasty...

But, my critique is as follows: The DOF is way too shallow for me. I would like to see the front of the object in focus and the rest blurred. Right now it just kinda looks accidental. (sorry)

And I think the colors are a bit dull. Is it a tad underexposed? The yellow should pop more, I think.

Just my .02

My thoughts exactly.

I see what you were going for but nothing really seems to be in focus here - even the "focused" part is a little blurry. I would try a slightly narrower aperture and making sure that at least one part of the cupcake is sharp. That'll make for a much better contrast with the blurry background, and a more engaging, dynamic image in general.

Also I would consider lightening it up a bit.

I agree I do think my photo is a bit underexposed. Although, to contradict some of your comments I am somewhat fond with the depth-of-field since it only keeps the lemon glazing that is curved downwards in focus, which leads your eye to it. It might have been a good idea to take one shot with a shallow depth-of-field and one with a deep depth-of-field to compare both and see which one is truly a more successful shot.

Thanks for all your comments!
