Do you think I should have gone for a deeper DOF? Where should I have focused? How do you like the composition? Would you say this is a good shot?

What aperture did you use? Also your focus was on the magenta color spot? Having soft focus on a macro shot or the focus behind the front of the subject will cause the eye to be disturbed trying to get the front in focus.
