Default Pipes

I took this with a Nikon D5000. Im new to photography and was playing around with the settings and found silhouette. It was next to a window so I was able to get good natural light to the left of it. Giving it a pretty cool image so I think. What could I have possible done to make this a better shot?

I'm new too, so take my thoughts with a grain of salt.

In terms of composition, what were you thinking of as the focal point of the image? The result focuses my eye on the bottom left-hand corner of the photo, however I have a feeling that you intended for the pipe to be the focus. Asking myself this question before taking any photo has helped improve my results.

Hey thanks for the point made..... the front pipe was what I was focusing on, however with the setting and the lighting on the picture it does look as though it was the left bottom of the picture. You brought a very important point to my attention though that I should focus on the main point of my photo.
