Talking Coral Rose in the Morning Light

Croral Rose in the Morning Light

Canon EOS 20D
Shooting Mode - Shutter-Priority AE
Tv( Shutter Speed ) - 1/100
Av( Aperture Value ) - 10.0
Metering Mode - Evaluative Metering
Exposure Compensation - 0
ISO Speed - 200
Lens - 100.0 mm
Focal Length - 100.0 mm

I snapped this when I saw the morning light coming through the window. Is it too light? What about the depth of field? I intended to use ISO 100, but failed to check it. How would the difference in ISO Speed have helped? I'm happy with the photo, but what could I do to make it better? Your comments and help are greatly appreciated.

Hi Linda,

Lovely work. I liked the other roses in your stream too, especially Rose in the Morning probably because of the lighting and the drops of dew on the petals. They seem to add an extra dimension to flowers.

In the Coral Rose picture, I don't think the 200 ISO is a big deal. What I'd personally like would be for the colors to be a little more intense. They look just a bit washed out to me. Do you know what your white balance setting was? Do you do any post-processing?

The composition looks great! I love the angle you have on the rose and the bokeh works beautifully.

Hi Linda,

I think the DOF is good and I love how crisp and sharp it is, but I would either crop the image or recompose so that the rose is more centered vertically. I might also try using a reflector to bounce more light into the middle of the rose.

Thanks for your comments. I'm a little thrown by your suggestion to center the rose. I thought it was preferred to shoot a little off center for interest. But I'll certainly take your comment into account. I really like the idea of the reflector, but don't own one. I'm very new at the photography gig. But I can see where the opportunity to brighten up an area would be helpful. I'll look into that. Thanks again for your constructive comments.

Reflectors are easily made from home materials. Think of your kids poster board. I am satisfied with the composition and lighting with your flower as you suggest in the title that light through the rose is what you were after. The green to the left is good as well to me. The picture shows much better at larger sizes. You captured the texture of the petal well and this shows up in the larger size as well. Jim
