Default Not too shabby for a kit lens, no?

Model: Canon EOS DIGITAL REBEL XS
ISO: 100
Exposure: 1/60 sec
Aperture: 5.6
Focal Length: 55mm
Flash Used: Yes

This is the pp version- only adjustment was time machine in Corel PSPP. Did I focus the right spot for a shot like this?

Interesting subject and nicely done for a kit lens.

Could you provide the Exif please and also anything else you did, such as if you reversed the lens or used extension tubes/close up?

Would be happy to provide some critique with that info included.

Cheers

Default Nothing special done here

Just exif data provided, focused and shot. For one out of a hundred, I had a steady hand and was fairly pleased with the result.

In response to your initial question, "Did I focus on the right spot", I'd say yes, your focus is good. What I find could be improved is the exposure. The shavings, where focused, seem to be blown out a bit, overexposed if you will.

It's an interesting subject as I stated previously, but intriguing also. Maybe try the shot again with a few different exposure settings, and maybe from a couple of different angles. Directly above looking down, lower down so you are almost level with the subject.

Might I inquire as to which lens you used? Could it have been opened up a bit more than 5.6?
