Question Warehouse shoot

Hello,
I have little experience with manual settings and have a hard time shooting in low light settings without the flash. I am going to a car show soon that will take place in a warehouse to try to get some experience. Can anyone give me some pointers on which settings to use?

I just got my first DSLR. It's a D40 with an AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6. I want to familiarize myself with the camera before I buy better lenses. I switched over from my Sony H7 which I still love.

shooting in manual will not help if there is not enough light. Indoors without a flash or tripod with a relatively slow lens will be difficult no matter the shooting mode you set. You may want to keep your camera in one of the program modes you are familar with rather than add one more complexity to an already challenging enviornment.

Start with program (adjustable), then aperture mode, then go to manual. In the program mode you should be able to select between various "good combinations" to see what is being traded around and still get a good exposure.Aperture mode will allow you to adjust only one setting to see what that does(camera will trade between the other two).

However, low light with D40 and kit lens will be very challenging.
