Cool Canon - Getting E-TTL to work with 430 EXII and PW Plus II and FlexTT5

Long time DPS'er, first time poster here.

I am in a quandary. I have recently acquired some PocketWizard equipment. Specifically, the Plus II on camera (Canon 50D) and the FlexTT5 hosting the off camera Canon 430 EX II. I have finally gotten them to talk to each other to my flash on manual mode, but am having issues with them talking to each other with the flash set to E-TTL. When I take it from manual to E-TTL, the TT5 blinks amber 5 times after a test and/or trigger.

I have looked extensively through this forum, strobist, as well as PW support. No luck in finding a similar set up.

Any advice on how to get this set up to talk on E-TTL?

From their website if this helps.

Local TTL Flash
Plus II Transceivers do not transmit TTL information.
You can use a TTL flash directly connected to your
camera and have remote flashes (not in TTL mode)
triggered by PocketWizards

The Plus II doesn't speak eTTL. You need another Flex or the Mini on-camera to communicate the eTTL signalling. This is why the Flex/Mini are hotshoe-specific--you need the other four hotshoe pins/contacts to do the eTTL secret whispers.

Default Thanks!

Thanks to the both of you. That is what I was afraid of... should have went with the mini flex or another flexTT5. Lesson learned!

It will still be a lot of fun playing around with manual flash, which I have not done yet. Forcing myself out of my comfort zone of auto flash could be fun!

Thanks again!
