Shadows aren't necessarily bad. They can be used very effectively. However, most standard portraits tend to avoid shadows on the face.
The key is to shoot in/with soft light. If you're shooting outdoors, look for shaded areas that are out of direct sunlight. Shooting in direct sunlight will not only throw harsh shadows, but it will also make the person squint - not very flattering in a portrait. Also, overcast days are great because the clouds diffuse the sunlight. Also, if you're using flash, you want to fire the flash into or through an umbrella. Umbrellas soften the light. I hope this helps.
