A Speedlight/Speedlite (Speedlight is Nikon, and Speedlite is Canon) will only improve your photography if you learn how to use and control it. Flash photography can be very confusing, frustrating, and discouraging at first; trust me. Haha. I'm still not as comfortable as I would like to be with it, but I am definitely passed the stage of ripping my hair out while trying to figure it out. I'm starting to get results that I am really happy with.
So, yes, a flash unit can definitely improve your photography. It sure beats that dinky on-board flash that your camera has - if it has one. In my opinion, a Speedlight/Speedlite is a good investment. I would recommend two sites for hardcore newbies. 1 - Planet Neil: Great site for learning about on-camera flash with a Speedlight/Speedlite in iTTL/eTTL modes, respectively. He shoots with Canon and Nikon, so it's beneficial for anyone that shoots either of those and even those that shoot with other equipment. 2 - The Strobist: Wonderful site for learning about flash and off-camera lighting. I would take a look at the Lighting 101 section for starters. Between those two sites, there is a wealth of information, and it will easily keep you occupied for a while. Don't try to digest it all at once; tackle smaller portions over a longer period of time. I hope this helps.
