Default How to get this sort of lighting?

How to get this sort of lighting? --> LINK
(I don't have the original source to ask)

The lighting is very soft and directional, so I'm guessing it's a softbox, or ringflash, or something, with the flash at a low power setting?

I attempted to recreate it, I don't think it looks the same - directed flash added a shadow, I'll have to try with a bounce board or something.

Any ideas if it's something else? I don't have a portable softbox on hand so I can't try it out.

That's almost certainly a ringflash. There are a couple cheap ways to do it.

look up fake ring flash, you will get a bunch of duct tape, aluminum foil, and cardboard solutions.

I was thinking if it was a snoot too - but my stronger suspicion was a ringflash. I just wanted to be sure.

I guess I'll go bust out the duct tape.

ring flash would be my first guess but may just a softbox overhead with the power set low so the light falls off...kind of like vertical feathering? just a guess. Since the upper left is lt a tad brighter..my 3rd would be a diffused light overhead left and a reflector lower right. Since it sounds like you don't have a soft box or a ring light so you may want to try that. You can difuse the light with just about anything translucent, like paper, an empty plactic milk jug ets and a poster board for a reflector...
btw, your shot is pretty good as it stands...

Yeah thanks for the suggestions - I have access to my school's film department equipment room, so getting a reflector isn't hard. I'm going to try see if I can get any more even light with reflectors.

If not, I guess I'll try my hand at DIY-ing a ringflash.
