A couple weekends ago my Sister in law came down for a photo shoot. I got to take pictures of both my nieces and my daughter. Im the one thing I noticed is I have allot of rim light from the flash on the backdrop. Sorta spills over onto the left side of their face what do you think? Problem is if I turn the flash down the wrinkles don't get nuked out. I added a flag to prevent the bg flash from hitting the subjects but the backdrop turns into a huge reflector.

Sister's

Camera: Canon EOS 20D
Exposure: 0.006 sec (1/160)
Aperture: f/6.3
Focal Length: 65 mm
ISO Speed: 200
Exposure Bias: 0 EV

Strobist:
Canon 580 EXII 1/4th Power shoot through umbrella with 1/2 cto gel camera left.
Vivitar DF400MZ 1/2 power on boom on backdrop with flag to keep flash from entering lens.

Cousin's

Camera: Canon EOS 20D

BTW: I love my new piece of thick white plastic I have for them to sit on.

despite the flare those are real nice. Adding the gobo would help if you had spill coming from the side but in this case it's coming off the back. Only soultion I know is to increase the distance between the subject and the background...I know you don't have a lot of leeway in that area...so alternative two is to cut back the light on the background and clean it up in post. Really i don't think the flare is excessive, its not like it ruined the images - they are good as is...

Did Lillie's 16 month shoot finally got to use my new grayish muslin and I thought to my self. Why not use a snoot and gel it. It worked great.

Thanks!.... Now that I have a backdrop I don't need to nuke to get rid of wrinkles I have a flash free for light limiters like snoots , grids, and flags... Time to build that grid. I need to get another cactus receiver also so I can do a 3 light setup.

My mom got teacher of the year for her school this year. She needed a updated Head-shot for her packet they require an updated head-shot.

So when she called asking I could do it I thought to my self hey a subject that is not under the age of 5 and that will stay still. I planed on doing about 3 different lighting set ups, but I only stuck with one. I started with one flash upper left from the camera with a 43 inch shoot through umbrella and one gelled on the back drop. After a few shots I discovered the light did not wrap around her face the way I wanted. So I went and got some poster board and had a human light stand hold it for me. This filled in the shadows on the right side of her face nicely. I had a great time learning and playing with the lights.

See the following setup and example pictures.

Because of the limit of 5 images here is the link to the setup picture..

Nice work Brian - She's going to be real happy with them. I like the purple gelled background - a little more modern than the classic gray background. I also like the more interesting texture of her shirt in the second image. Those two elements make that one my pick.

Thanks... I saw the prints monday and they always look better than on the computer. She loves both. I do like the second one also. My first try's with the orange background looked real funky my goal was light brown turned out bright orange.

First attempt note theses images are not what I picked this is representing my first failed try, After this I dialed down the background light.
