nice stuff Sybren and Brian..

Brian.. i'm keen to see what that (or other) would look like with and without the CTO.
i'm on the verge of buying a set of "proper" gels..

do you find it effects the colour of the whits at all ? like if you use full CTO ?

I will try and remove it next shoot for one shot. Its very minor.

It adds just a hint a warmth to the photo I have found anything beond say 1/4th 1/2 is to much some times. I have never tried full. There is also CTS filters that are a little less orange. I also white balance manually via expo disk. I got the rosco swatch book

Rosco | Cinegel Swatchbook | 950SBCNG0103 | B&H Photo Video

Rosco | Roscolux Swatchbook | 950SBLUX0103 | B&H Photo Video

And made a simple adapter out of plastic.

Homemade gel holder

Home Made gel holder

This was with 1/2 cto out side.. It was an overcast day but I warmed it up.

Did Lillie Kates 10 month shoot. I decided to try and gell the backdrop I used a Rosco 90 Red. It is the same exact setup as my high key setup but diffrent power outputs on the flashes. You have to play around with it to balance the color of the back while still front lighting the subject.

Strobist:
Vivitar DF400MZ 1/1 power on boom pointing at backdrop with #26 Light Redgel
Nikon SB24 1/4 power shoot through umbrella upper camera left

Camera: Canon EOS 20D
Exposure: 0.01 sec (1/100)
Aperture: f/5.6
Focal Length: 66 mm
ISO Speed: 100

Ghetto girl

Shutterspeed: 0.005 sec (1/200)
Aperture: f/5.6
Focal Length: 56 mm
ISO Speed: 400

SB28 in 45" softbox umbrella (backed) at 1/8th down at 45 degrees directly in front of model
(its prettymuch an octabox IMHO) thats the shape of light presented to the subject anyway.

Sb24 behind model, snooted onto background at 1/16th

Triggered Via Cactus V4

Nice Job candleman!
Brian, I meant to comment here as well on the pink gel... I know you mentioned how tough it was to balance the the main light and not have it spill backto the background and wash out the gelled light. How close is your main? Can you bring it in tighter? You would then close down your aperture more, the light from the main would fall off faster, possibly presenting less spill. I know you're working in a defined space so maybe that would not work anyway. just a thought...this is a great thread btw.

It was maybe 7-8 feet from the actual backdrop stand pointed down at like a 20 degree angle. I may try that next time. I need to sit down one day and spend about an hour testing diffrent settings. My wife was rushing me and Lillie was very impatient so I had about 5-10 min to figure it out.

Hallway pose

Exposure: 0.005 sec (1/200)
Aperture: f/6.3
Focal Length: 70 mm
ISO Speed: 400

triggered with Cactus V4's

the strobe on the right was bare, and had blue gel over it (ok just celofene)
firing down the hallway to get some background detail.. and show off th staris and hallway. the blue gives a "night time" effect

the key light on her was my 45" softbox umbrella (it has a backing.. so its like an octabox) fired at 1/4 power
it was up high, and pointing down at 45 degrees for typical loop light.
the shadow under the chin it creates seperates the face from the body a bit ... i like it anyhow.

naturally tanned and brilliant make-up... so no warming filters required.
