Smile SB600 off camera remote TTL

Hello. Back for another question. If I want to use the SB 600, off camera with the D300 in commander mode. but i can't figure out how to set it to ttl mode or ttl-fp mode and still stay in wireless. am i required to have the camera and the flash already in commander mode and then try to get to ttl or ttl-fp mode? i am using CPU lenses. thanks!

i'm pretty sure its the same for a d300.. but heres how it works with my d80
i havnt done this in a while... but heres how i recall doing it.

set the body to commander mode
in there you need to choose TTL or manual and a channel and group
AND the flash power/flash exposure bias
press the button for the pop-up to jump up... thats how it triggers..

set the flash to wireless (thats an annoying 2 button operation) and the flash to the same channel/group number
i think the flash needs to mirror the body in terms of TTL or Manual setting

the sb600/d300 manual should step it through.
