it was designed specifically for off camera... Strobist

but to answer your question... i'm not sure why it doesnt at least fire on-camera, albeit manual flash.
what you really want on camera is an eTTL capable flash.
i dont know canon stuff, but i think a 430ex II should do the trick.

thats what i was orginially gonna get, but the lumopro was cheaper. i followed the "mounting flash on camera" directions (seems like theres nothing to it..) but then it wont fire! i swear things like this always happen to me! maybe i'll just sell them and get the 430exll after all! im gonna ask the mpex guy on flickr, maybe he can clear it up for me

As far as I know, any non-dedicated hot shoe flash (without damaging voltage) should work on DSLR with standard hot shoe in manual and/or auto (not TTL) mode.

I can use all my old flashes (+ Wein HSHS) with Nikon and Canon DSLR without any problem.

seriously..?
so you're saying i can put a 580Ex on my D80 and it will work in manual ?
i thought there were some voltage issues between Nikon/Canon that caused them to either not to fire or to pop something...depending on which was mounted to which.

i've never investigated it tho'

I should have said any non-dedicated flashes. However, using the Wein HSHS should turn the 580EX into a non-dedicated one.

I just test my Nikon SB-800 + Wein HSHS with Canon D30. It works great.

aaaaah OK, i see.
and here (me being a dummy) thought a Wein HSHS was a flash of some description..
yet again its proven that "assumption is the mother of all....screw-ups"

thanks for that.

have you put batteries in the flash, and did you flick the on button?

try this,
when you put a flash on the hotshoe the pop-up is replaced by that flash.

SO!
turn your camera's built in flash to manual power rather than TTL.... that might do the trick.
(i know my camera has that ability... i do believe many canons dont allow manual power to the pop-up)

just a thought
