Don't set your camera to external flash. Just try manual mode and set the ISO and aperture according to the flash. Keep your shutter speed at or slower than the sync speed (e.g. 1/60).

Wein HSHS = Wein Hot Shoe to Hot Shoe Safe Sync adapter. I always use it with my old flashes.

It should, but you want to make sure the non-firing pins aren't contacting anything in the hotshoe, so you avoid possibly shorting one of the contacts or misfiring. I stick an SB-26 on my Canon hotshoe and have no problems firing it; but I've pulled the TTL pins.

I'm not sure what you're bothering to do in the menus. Those should be all grayed out. The camera menu control of the external flash only works if you have a 430EXII or a 580EXII mounted, otherwise, it won't communicate and it doesn't matter what you have it set to. I'd say just make sure you have flash firing enabled. You don't have to worry about TTL signal pins, because the LP120 doesn't have any--it only has the central firing pin.
