Default Vivitar 285HV and Nikon D80

I have this flash for a few years and started to use it on my NikonD80. It took me a while because I was too afraid to fry my camera.
Anyways, it works great. The other day when i was at the camera store, they advised me not to do this anymore. It is still a risk and advised me to buy this little adapter to attach it to the hot shoe. Do I need this after all? Is there still a chance I could burn my camera?

I was under the impression the HV indicated it was safe. Any chance you know someone with a voltmeter that can test it for you?

You are indeed correct. The 285HV has a trigger voltage of 6v which is safe for digital cameras.

I guess the store clerk may have been confusing it with the older 285 model.
