Default Strobes firing by flash problem

I just purchased Interfit EXD200 kit (2 200ws strobes, stands, shoot through umbrella, and softbox.

Here's my question?

I set everything up in my home to practice with and have an event tomorrow night at church. I ran the sync cord, added a Y-adapter so I could split the cord to each light. With sync cords plugged in, press the trigger, flash, all-good, but just out of curiosity I grabbed my point and shoot and took a shot with the flash and it still triggered my strobes... not what I wanted. I thought by the sync cords being plugged in that would disable the flash-sync on the strobes. Am I doing something wrong or do I need to put some tape over the light sensor on the strobe heads?

Does it matter? If you're using the cord and it goes off when you want it too I don't see why it would make a difference if they would work without the cord.

My concern is at an event like the church, their are sure to be other people walking around with their point and shoot cameras with flash going off all the time. I would not want my strobes going off randomly all night and miss firing when I'm shooting.

There should be an option to disable the optical trigger on the monolights. It might be a good time to consult with the instruction booklet that came with your lights. Otherwise the tape will work too I suppose.

Yep, Rather than messing with the custom functions - covering the little sensors with a bit of black gaffer tape works just fine.

Thanks guys, I'll opt for the tape for now. The instruction manual was very..very UN-informative.

I really felt like a moron when I realized that pressing the flash sensor button until the indicator light goes off, turns off the light sensor.
