Default Pop up flash solutions

So I'd love to take indoor pictures where the light obviously isnt desirable.. so i started looking for a flash i could put in the hot shoe but im not ready to spend that much money yet since i really dont shoot indoors that often. So then i turned my focus to pop up flash diffusers and came across this....

U1S Professor Kobre's Lightscoop, Standard Version Bounce Flash Device, Universal Model, fits over the Pop-up Flash of most SLR Cameras (American Photo Editor's Choice 2008)

Have any of you had much experience with this sort of thing.. I guess its actually a reflector but either way it seems like it would be a good compromise for the time being.

Thoughts?

It will work fine in a small room with a white ceiling. Anything larger, like a large family room, and the flash won't have the power to light up anything across the room.

Personally I have tried one without a lot of success because it is still a small light source aimed directly at the subject which creates harsh shadows. You do not need a dedicated flash to get good indoor pics. A good Vivitar 285HV or Yongnou can be had from Amazon or ebay for less than $100 and with a little effort understanding non-ttl flash operation you can produce pictures as good as those done with a dedicated flash. Both provide bounce and swivel heads and have adjustable power output. They just will not support the pre-flash which the dedicated system uses to automatically set exposure. You must figure it out and set it up. These flashes will also work with the various flash modifiers giving you a lot of flexibility at a low price. Besides at the end of the exercise you will have a much better understanding of how flash lighting works.
