Default High Speed Sync

Alright, this has been bugging me for awhile now.

I have a 450d, and a 430ex II flash. Now, everything I've read says that I should be able to do highspeed sync, and one time I was able to accidentally do it, but no matter how many times I read the directions, I just can't get the 430ex ii to go into high speed sync mode. The button just doesn't do it. Tried it on manual, ttl, and ettl, just incase I was missing something. It just doesn't want to do it. I know it's probably something stupid that I'm missing.. I was able to get it to go into high speed sync once, but it didn't even show the icon on the flash saying that it was in hss, it just did it.

Any ideas?

Did you try going through the camera menus?

Weird, though. You should be able to do it just by pushing the button on the back.

Is your shutter speed set to actually be faster than your sync speed?

Not accessible through the camera's menu. Apparently, from what I've read, you can only access the 580 through the 450D menu. All I get is "This menu cannot be displayed. Incompatible flash or flash's power is turned off.

It's kind of annoying, I threw my manual earlier lol. My shutter speed won't go above 200 with the flash connected. For some reason, if I play around and adjust the aperture value around a bit before trying to change the shutter speed, then it'll allow me to go above 200 "weird", but the hss button still doesn't do anything, and as soon as I press the shutter release it drops back down to 200 again.. I know the button itself isn't broken, because it's also the second curtain sync and that works just fine.

Actually, the Mark IIs are both supposed to be accessible through the menu. From the dpreview posting of the press release:

Replacing the Canon Speedlite 430EX, the Speedlite 430EX II offers fast, silent recycling and full control via the menu system of compatible EOS cameras.
It's the Mark Is that can't be controlled from the menu. Are you sure the flash is seated properly and locked in place? (I know, but I gotta ask it). It sounds like only the center pin is making contact.

That's weird, because here's another person who couldn't access theirs from in-camera.
450D and 430ex flash: Canon EOS 1100D - 300D Forum: Digital Photography Review

It seats properly and locks down snug, but I'm wondering if there's a connection issue in there somewhere. Btw, thanks for helping out.

Edit: No in-camera control through wireless triggers either that support ettl and high speed sync

If you read closely, you'll see that thread is about someone who has the 430EX (mark I), not the 430EX II.

The 580EX and 430EX don't do the camera-menu thing. The 430EX II and 580EX II do. That was probably the biggest update, aside from the addition of the locking lever and (in the case of the 580EX II, weathersealing, a PC sync port, and the autothyristor).

Just sorry I can't help pinpoint the issue.

Might be the camera's hotshoe, then. Maybe try the old rubbing-with-a-pencil-eraser-to-clean-the-contacts trick. Maybe also check that the pins in the 430EX II's foot are properly spring-loaded, and not stuck down in the foot.

I've looked at that thread probably 3 times and never noticed that it was about the mk I . I'm going to blame that one on previous frustration so I wasn't paying attention

I'll give that a try "as soon as I go buy a pencil" lol. Thanks for the tips, very much appreciated. Hopefully I get it straightened out.

Ok. I messed about with my 50D and 430EX on-camera. Is the 430EX II in slave mode? Try taking it out of slave mode.

Long shot because I'm still learning with my external flash too but mine won't go into hss if I'm using it as a bounce flash, that is angled. It only works at right angle to the camera.....

If it's in manual or ttl it's not in slave mode. But putting it in ettl automatically puts it in slave mode. So I decided to just try it with those two settings. Still no luck getting high speed sync to come on though. Even when the shutter speed is over 1/200, the button only acts as the second curtain sync. It's got to be something I'm doing wrong, but all the manual says is to press the button and it should come on.

Still won't get into hss at a right angle, but it is letting me go above 1/200 momentarily at that position. Out of 15 shots, I even got it to stay above during one of them. It didn't show it being in hss though, and at 1/250, the banding from the shutter covered about 1/4 of the image.
