Default Gary Fong Lightsphere Collapsible Inverted Dome Diffuser

This is on my next listed item to look into to better diffuse while shooting outdoors in the dark to better diffuse my flash while using the flash on camera. I tried looking for a video or/and photos online on Before/After comparison but wasnt able to find any. If anyone has video/photo already online somewhere please share it here or if not if you have the product please make a video or/and photo to compare differences.

Don't waste your money. GF is useless outside. The whole principle is it is like a bare bulb and scatters light everywhere. You get bounce off all the walls & ceiling. Obviously, there are no walls or ceiling outside.

It is also .75 cents in injected plastic, which sells for 70 bucks.

Use something like this for 4 bucks

I'm not sure how useful it would be outdoors, but Mark did an episode with it on DP 1on1. Did a series of shots using bare flash, bounced flash, the lightsphere, and umbrella.

super-nova is the bomb! a portable ceiling that folds flat. By repositioning it, it can also serve as your "black foamy thing" when you do have walls to take advantage of...

Here is another template for the lumniquest 80/20

I have made them out of white & black fun foam glued together with 3m spray glue. I have two versions, one with the holes in the top for indoors for when I can't bounce and a solid one for outdoors. Little smaller and a little stronger than the other link I posted.

I have one its nice when you ar inside and have like a black roof with dark walls. Although Bounce still looks more natural. I normally remove the dome and have it to just throw a little light forward. You can make the same thing with a cheep large soup boule from a Chinese restaurant. The reason I like it is it collapse and will literally fit in my pocket. If I can bounce a flash I bounce I flash. If I can use an off camera light source I use an off camera light source. If im in the type of situation where its a choice between bare flash or the GF i will pick the GF.

Are you going to be shooting outside at a time sensitive event? or just like portraits? If portraits use a off camera flash. The Gary Fong is still on axis and if its your only light source you still are gonna have crappy flat light.

Thanks guys for your input, so this GF product is best used where I have a ceiling/roof and/or walls near by correct?

I bought the $10 "lambency diffuser dome" (aka Fary Gong) on amazon. Not terrible if there's nothing to bounce off of, but I'd rather just have an assistant hood a reflector 6 feet away and redirect the flash into it.
