Smile Nigh time Fashion Shoot Outdoor...

Dear fellow togs,

I'm about to do a fashion photo shoot with one female model, it's to be taken after 8pm and the only lighting will be the street lights and buidings.

I've only got one chance to get this right and I don't want blurred images etc.

I've not shot at night before, so any advice, tips or direction would be greatly appreciated. I'll be using a Nikon D3100, do I need outdoor lamps, reflectors etc?

Thank you in advance for any advice.

Dave

Sun goes down around 6:30 - 7, so you will be shooting after sundown. You are going to get blurred images that are very noisy & grainy from high ISO, unless the streets are lit like a football stadiums.

You need external lighting (strobes or flashes) to do this. There is no other way around it, I'm afraid to say.

Just a question why did you take on a paid job if you don't have the equipment or have never done this before? At least practice with a family member or a fiend first..

This image is sort of similar although there still is a little light. I used a slower shutter speed and a steady hand to also pull in some ambient light. In your case this would be the street lights.

D3s + 50/1.4? Should be okay at high ISO with careful bracing/a tripod.

It'll still be noisy, but maybe thats the look they;re going for.

Just under $250 rental for the day (Headshots Rentals). If it's a serious shoot, it'll be covered by the invoice

To give you an example, this was lit with an 48" octabox camera right.
I shot this at f3.2 to defocus the lights behind him and a shutter speed of 1/5 to allow some of the streetlights into the exposure. As you can tell, the streetlights did not contribute much light.
