Default Highspeed Sync off-camera...

What is the cheapest way to get ETTL/Highspeed sync for off-camera flash? The only option I see is getting a 580 EX II w/ pocket wizards which would come out to about a thousand bucks... :-\

If you have a T3i, 7D or 60D (?) then all you'd need is a 430EX and you'd have off camera ETTL because the pop flash on those cameras will act as a commander. You just then need batteries for the flash and LoS.

A long Flash Zebra TTL cord would work as well.

I think you could get a ST-E2 to work as on camera commander for any compatible off camera flashes (430/580's ?) if you don't have built in commander capability.
I'm not a Canon guy so I may be mistaken....

The sync cord would be cheapest, but not terribly flexible/convenient.

If you don't mind going wired whenever you need the high speed sync, there's always this option
ETTL Cord for Canon Speedlites | Off-Camera Flash Cord | OCF Gear

On the few Canon cameras that can use the pop up flash as a master, you can't get high speed synch. The fastest shutter speed you'll be able to get is your camera's flash synch speed.

ST-E2 (or Yongnuo clone of same), but you will be limited in range and by line of sight. With Radio, probably the Pixel Knights.

if you're going to spend as much for the Knights you might as well pop for the Pixel Kings and get ETTL, TTL pass through and HSS . i've had my kings for about 4 months and worked great

Just remember HSS limits the flash output so some times its not all its cracked up to be if your attempt is to over power the sun. So make sure it will do what you want before plopping down 500$ to a grand.

The man speaks da truth:

Here is an example of a test I did. This is with a single SB600 off camera in a softbox about 4 feet from the subject:

On the other hand, this was lit with 3 speedlights off camera.

I do find it interesting that the baby speedlight has enough power to reach f13 if placed close enough to the subject.

So where it can be useful, usually a single flash does not have the guts to light a subject in FP or high speed sync
