Could be bad luck--the low price has to come from somewhere. Out of curiousity, which model? And was the foot plastic or metal? The earlier plastic-foot versions of some of the models (e.g., YN-560, YN-460 II) are known to be less reliable than the later metal-footed versions, which have QC inspection stickers in them.

Geeks who know electronics pretty much would fix the earlier versions by swapping out the bad capacitor for a good one, but this requires knowing how to discharge capactitors safely, how to desolder/solder connections, and knowing how many farads you need so it's not for everyone.

Personally, my YN-560 has been great and I've had it for about nine months. No issues at all. Metal-foot version.
