Default Starburst Effect

Hi!

Im here Love to photoraph, married to a Marine and we live in Oceanside, CA on Camp Pendletong.

Hopefully Im in the right forum for my question.

Ive been trying and TRYING to get the starburst effect with my Cannon and I just can't seem to get it!

What settings do you recommend I use? I can't figure out what Im doing wrong.

Thanks!

You can either use a star filter or you can use a small aperture (large f/stop number).

Here's a self-portrait with starburst. I know, the model is ugly !

f/9, 18mm , ISO 500, shutter was 207 seconds ! But the parking lot lights were a long way away and I wanted to get the stars in the sky.

ps: It's taken at an abandoned real estate development, empty half-built houses and all. The LAW ran me off shortly after I took the photo.
