To control the light, to change how it falls, where it falls, etc.

Thanks Scooter. None of my portrait work is done with a large group (1-2 people, usually), so these results are ideal for me

That's great as they work as Gobo ..particularly for product shooting that i am going to learn next. I think learning the lighting basics will take me 2-3 years.

1) That might not generate the best result if the grid is attached on the softbox. Can i move the grid in between softbox and subject or even within the softbox? If not, any product can do what i have described? Sometimes, we need to move very near the subject and far from the softbox so that it creates darker hard shadow... Sometimes we need to move within the softbox to create other effect ...

2) They are more expensive than softbox right?

Need a little help in defining equipment...a "gobo" is short for "go between" Something that goes between the light source and the subject. Generally I don't hear people refer to grids as gobos. Gobos usually refer to flags, screens, or pattern cutouts. Grids for a soft box fit in the recessed lip on the front of the softbox. Some softboxes do not have a recessed front lip and therefore can't accept a typical fabric grid. The grid on a softbox, like a grid on a strobe reflector stays in one place.

softbox and softbox with grid:

Grids for a strobe reflector:

gobos, flags, & scrims:
