I have never used an actual gary fong. However, I made my own out of an ikea storage container. I hated it. It may have been mine that was the issue but I didn't like what it did. I researched and researched light modifiers for months before choosing one. I went with the Demb Flip-it based off of reviews and examples (check out Flickr for whole groups with pics from these).

I have the light sphere collapsible mainly I use it for fill for bounce. I remove the dome and bounce off the ceiling and it kicks some light forward. If the subject is against a wall you still get the line behind them on the wall. I only use it for run and gun situations. During the not as bright point in the days it works as nice fill light outside. However it does not give the same results as good directional bounce IE not the roof. Or off camera flash.
So you still get that flash look but its not as bad as direct flash.. So if your doing weddings or fast moving portrait conditions. Sure give it a try. If you have time to do any off camera work do save the 50$ put it toward a strobist setup. Used for fill outside at dusk.. ![]() Payne's senior photo session by Brian Hursey, on Flickr
