Interesting article, but the first shot is clearly not lit with a pop-up flash -- the shadow on the background is too far to the right of the subject. The thing about pop-ups is that they hardly give any shadows at all from the PoV of the camera they're on.

It might be lit with a hand-held speedlight, perhaps connected by a sync cable.

Nah... when you turn the camera into portrait orientation, the flash is off axis enough to cast a side shadow.

I've been using the Octodome NXT recently, gives some really great results! Love it because it's a small softbox that looks like a bigger softbox and it's very portable.

Here's one I shot with the NXT.
