Default synch corded flash as commander?

I posed this question in an older thread but got no response. Considering my earlier issues with my camera not having a commander mode can I use a flash unit capable of being a commander (sb700, 900 etc) connected to my camera with a TTL cord as commander for a non wired slaved flash unit?

If the TTL cable is a Nikon cable (or direct equivalent) built to pass all TTL data, you should be able to use the flash exactly as if it were on the hotshoe. So, if you're using an SB700 attached to a D5000 (for instance), yes, you can use the SB700 as a commander.
