Default ISO 100 and still noise?

Hi there! I hope I'm posting in the right section...

I recently took some fun photos with a friend. It was a really cloudy day in Hamburg, as you can see on the picture.
Original picture without any post processing:

ISO 100
f/4
1/640sec.
Canon EOS 450D with Canon 24-105 f/4L

When I zoomed in I noticed, that I'm not really satisfied with how they turned out.

How come there is so much noise even though I shot at ISO100(manually)? Is it just because of the cloudy day or could I have done something differently?
Also is the chromatic abberation you can see around the top of is head normal for a Canon L lens?

I know the picture is not 100% in focus but I'm more concerned about the above questions. Thank you for your help!

The person appears to be underexposed.

Get the exposure right and it will look a lot better.

Try metering off the face, and check the histogram..

For this lens, used at the widest end of its zoom range, wide open? Yes. That's one of its weak spots.

It's also lateral CA, which is easily fixable in post-processing. Learn to live with it. No lens is perfect, and the 24-105 is more ambitious than most L lenses in design goals.

Thing you could have done differently: stopped down and used your pop-up flash for fill.

it could also be that your sensor is not that great.

A tip for getting a good exposure on skin. Point your camera at the front of your hand in the same lighting as your subject take a meter on Aperture priority. remember the settings then put it in manual mode and dial them in so when you take multiple exposures you are getting consistant lighting.

Re-adjust your exposure settings when the lighting changes.

It's not a camera, or sensor, problem at ISO 100.

Thanks to all three of you! I thought noise is only from a high ISO setting, but as I'm reading on google right now, there are different sources for noise.

Too bad .. I thought when I spend $1000 bucks on a lens I woudn't have to worry about it anymore. But I suppose it's only as good as the photographer ;-)

I still have to learn a lot but I'm glad there is a community like DPS with so many helpful people and fast answers :-) Thank you again!

Noise from underexposure is notorious for being worse than noise from high ISO - and more easily fixed in post processing. Bump up your ISO next time, and also spot meter off your subject as Richard suggested.

I have the same camera and I do struggle with noise over any ISO over 400, but I'd rather go to 800 or 1600 than to underexpose. If you'd like, I can link you to some high ISO pics I've taken and the finished product does not show noise.

This also looks like more than 100%: if that's the case, youre actually seeing pixels.
