I'm digging up this thread to thank everyone for the advice you gave me here. I did take that class in the fall and it did help the ideas to sink in. I really learned the benefit a meter would give though that isn't in the budget right now. I did get some umbrellas though and have been practicing with my flash.
Took some shots of my son, got light just right on his face and then when looked at the shots on the computer I blew out his feet in every one. That was with a reflective silver umbrella. Doh. I chimped the shots on the LCD, but didn't bother zooming in on his feet. So I obviously have a lot of practicing to do. I'll try to share some shots soon. Thank you all again.
