Sure. anything solid white will work really. Its comes down to portability and stiffness. Portability so you can get it from point a to point b and stiffness so you can aim/direct the reflection where you want it.
And reflectors don't have to be white, gold and silver are common. You could even use another color...but the reflector will put some of that color in the reflection and most of the time you don't want the color cast.

Ditto:

I use white frequently. Gold very rarely as it is intended to warm the subject. It can be nice when shooting twilight images when the sky is also warm. Silver is contrasty, so nice if you want to catch detail, not so good for a beauty shot. It is like anything, different modifiers for different effects.

I just picked up a set of windshield reflectors at Wal-Mart for $6 -- they fold up & fit in my backpack, and they're shiny silver on one side and dull silver on the other. I haven't had a chance to use them yet, but they look like a pretty good option for the cost.

Anything can be used as a reflector. Really, the only difference will be how efficient it is. As an earlier poster stated, a white t-shirt, worn, can be a reflector. Just remember, silver or gold colored reflectors will be very bright on the eyes of the subject and should be used with caution.

I have a nice thick white foam board, added a sheet of silver foil to one side. Lightweight, easy to haul around, works great. 2-in-1 use...
