You might try taking a look at one of the starter strobist kits offered by Midwest Photo Exchange. Strobist Starving Student SC1 Lighting Kit
With that you get a Lumopro flash, light stand, a set of Cactus radio transmitter/receiver, a 43" shoot through umbrella, a set of gels and a carrying case. All for around your target price point of $300. |

I think that starter strobist kit would probably work well for what you are trying to do. The only thing I might suggest is see if they would substitute the Wescott 60" optical white umbrella with removable cover for the 46" shoot through umbrella they are packing with the kit. That would give you larger coverage for those 5 and 6 person groups plus you could use it as a reflective umbrella by leaving the outer black cover on it in addition to using it as a shoot through umbrella when the cover is off. Maybe they can just charge you the difference in cost. The Westcott 60" is $36.99 by itself so the upgrade charge from the kit one can't be all that much.
Here's the link to the Westcott 60" umbrella Westcott 60" Optical White Umbrella with Removable Cover Yes, radio triggers are the way to go especially if you will have people walking around like at a wedding and you don't want them tripping over sync chrords when they come over to get a shot. |
