Post Camera X Sync & Flash High Speed Sync query

Most entry level-mid level DSLR camera's have a flash sync speed of 1/200 or 1/250th. Some older one had 1/500th. So if I want to take a flash picture, I've to keep the camera at sync speed. There is a feature known as high speed sync on flashgun. It allows one to shoot at shutter-speeds above the flash sync speed of the camera.

I know the flash needs to throw high power when used at faster shutter-speeds at 1/500 or above. So the operating range of flash becomes limited.

So does one needs to bother about the having a high flash sync on the camera? What are the pitfalls if any of using high speed sync on the flashgun?

It makes using fill in flash easier (depending on lighting conditions) because you can still use your flash on maximum power..

(2) What are the pitfalls if any of using high speed sync on the flashgun?
Reduced light output from the flash..

I don't believe it will work unless you have the FP turned on on the camera. I do not think it will work on a camera that doesn't have FP.
