The quality of light can be very good from an umbrella and as Rentham points out are a lot cheaper.

here's a quick comparison:
Very cool thanks, maybe I will try it out first with a larger umbrella. Be much cheaper doing that and then adding a softbox later if I wanted to.

right on.
A 60" convertible umbrella (bounce or shoot through) is $38
a 60" octobox is $270 plus another $40 or 50 for the speed ring
