Default Double off-camera flash - D90 + SB600 + SB900

Hello

I'm new to using off camera flash and wondered if anyone could help me. Is it possible to fire both an SB600 and SB900 off camera together using the 'commander mode' on a Nikon D90? I've been able to fire them on their own but want to get more creative shooting people with this set up ...

Be great if anyone could let me know - if so might need to invest in another flash stand/umbrella.

Is it right that the on-camera trigger flash shouldn't interfere with the lighting - it fires slightly before the shot's taken?

Thanks

Cx

sure, you can fire a whole bunch of flashes in commander mode.

Your on board flash won't impact the exposure.

I dont have an SB-900; but do use a SB-800 plus two SB-600's.
If I'm using my Nikon D70 (I know its an oldie) then I use the camera in 'command' on channel 3 and speedlights in 'Remote' on the same channel 3 triggering via the camera popup.
My D90 and D300S can be set in any group A,B or C and any of 4 channels (camera's in command mode using popup, and slaves in remote).
If you want to you can mount the SB-800 or in your case SB-900 in 'command' mode on the camera and trigger the SB600's.

They can only do 2 groups with the pop-up: 3 with an SB-800 or SB-900 on the camera as a master (which is how I usually shoot it).

I've done shoots with as many as a dozen speedlights: as long as theyre within LOS of the master and in 2 or 3 groups, you can use as many as you'd like.
