Default Slave Flash Use

Hi! It's been a while and I have just received a slave flash (ZEIKOS Digital Pro Slave Flash ZE-DS12) for Christmas. I tried following the camera manual (Canon Digital Rebel XT) and the flash manual to get them to work together and apart and have had no luck in getting the slave flash to fire. Could it be a bad one? I set the flash to slave and slave mode S1. The light lights up so I know there's power. But, the test button (if that is indeed what it is as the manual says to test it but doesn't actually point it out) doesn't even work. Does anyone have any experience with this model? Thanks!

If the test button doesnt trigger the flash, it's dead.

looking at the image of the unit, it doesn't look like it has a test button, just a ready light...

Default Zeikos slave

Check the batteries are in right way, the plus minus symbols are on the sliding lid. The test button is the little translucent thing low down on the back. Flash charges instantly with fresh batteries, my old old one took a few seconds with a increasing pitch whine. My problem is the camera flash seems to power down, it seems to detect the slave flash and turns off, and the Zeikos either doesn't sync properly with the shutter or is too weak. So pics are too dark both from the camera and the slave side.
