Flash

I am slowly building my photog tool kit and my next purchase will be my first external flash. I currently only have the pop-up on camera flash. What would be my next move? I am a hobby photographer and shoot mostly mine and other people's kids, kid's sports, candid fun family events and the like (no studio set ups needed). I am just trying to improve my shot quality, especially for indoor shots. I shoot with a Sony a330 and have various kit lenses and a few nicer quality lenses as well. Any guidance would be appreciated!
