Multi Lighting Situation

Hello,

I was asked by my boss to take a pic of his family in front of the sign on his building. The challenge was that where they were standing was relatively low light while the sign was right in the middle of midday sunlight. Through trial and error in manual mode I was able to meter off the low light area and adjust the shutter speed/aperture to get the best shot I could. I had to really go outside of the cameras reccomendations for this one.

Does anyone know of an easier way to do this?

My solution would be to take two shots, one metered for the sign, and one for the people in the shade. Then combine them in pp.
But I'm far from an expert.

The sign is reflector a large amount of light, so you need to increase the amount of light on your subject by using either a reflector or flash units.
