Default Lens flair issue/lighting issue! please help!

So I recently went out to attempt to take a friend's portrait. When I got to the location I noticed that It would look great if I could put them directly infront of the sun with just enough sun showing to create lens flair. However ho matter how I attempted to adjust my settings I could only get a subject that was drowned out by light or a subject that was incorrectly exposed...
What can I do to get just my subject+flair?

You need to fill flash from the front... Your trying to over power the sun not an easy task.. It gets even harder when the native sync of the camera is probably 1/250...

Try using a reflector (or equivalent device) to bounce light back on the subject...it's the perfect opportunity to use one

If you're not manually setting the camera settings, but letting the camera meter and set things, you might want to try going to a spot-meter on the people instead of the area/matrix metering which probably looked at the whole scene.
