Does anyone have any before and after picsusing the pop up flash with and without a lightscoop? I'm thinking about buying an external flash, but perhaps a lightscoop will achieve the results somewhat? I don't know. $200+ is a lot of money right now since I just bought a Nikon d5000 package. Please help me decide

I have one & I like it very much. Sorry I don't have any before & after to show you... maybe later today I can play with it & show you. It's a nice way to add extra light w/out the harshness of the flash.

I agree w/ Zona... it's not a perfect solution but it does soften the harshness of the flash in times when you need it. I do plan on eventually getting an external swivel flash. I've found it a nice alternative in the interim.

I saw this post yesterday and did some investigating on the lightscoop. I thought it was pretty neat and a good alternative for someone like me who can't afford to get an external flash unit yet. I hate using the built-in flash because of the terribly flat, harsh look of it.
But I also wasn't willing to spend money on the lightscoop when I could use that money to save up for an external flash. So... I DIYed one for myself. And I have to say, it's works pretty well. I haven't used it a ton yet (since I did only make it last night), but the soft lighting I got from it was really nice. I suggest trying to make your own before you go out and buy one. I created mine with some lightweight cardboard, an reflective emergency blanket, some tape, glue and a rubberband (to hold it on my camera). The first attached file is a quick shot I took of myself with my Diy Lightscoop ( I know the exposure is a little off. I was just fiddling around). The second photo is to show what my lightscoop looks like.

Here's are some better examples of photos I've taken with my DIY Lightscoop.
In the fisrt photo, I bounced the flash off of a piece of white board because I didn't have a good wall in the direction that I needed. In the second photo I just bounced off my wall. ![]() ![]()
