Shadows at High Noon

Just wondering if your doing portraits outside at high noon how do you get great shots with out a lot of shadows?

I shoot in the shade or if there isn't any, try to knock out the ambient with lighting gear (this is the lighting thread, right?). A max shutter speed of 1/200th, f/11 and ISO 100 is enough to knock out almost all of the direct light, then bring them back with you lighting gear.

The only way I know how to do this is to shoot in open shade and use reflectors to bounce the light to soften the shadows...
