Default Smoke Trails

I tried photographing smoke trails last night and I'm not sure how to get the smoke sharper. I was using a 50mm prime lens, f22 1/250, and strobe lighting (not exactly sure of the setting) and still I can't seem to get a really sharp image. If I use an additional strobe will it just blow out the highlights?
Thanks

The common "stop down the aperture for sharper images" only applies to about f/11 on a crop-sensor camera. Open the aperture up to f/8 and then see what happens.

I think the advice helped. All it will take is more practice I guess.
