The SU-800 is useless for bodies with the on-board commander flash (like your D90). Skip it: use the money for another flash!

+1. The loss of "commander mode" is one of the things that, at times, makes me regret the step "up" to a D3 (i.e. made the upgrade more expensive)

With the SU-800 you can control more Groups and you don't get that nasty pre-flash from pop-up flash while in commander. D90 commander mode only allows you to control 2 or 3 Groups, I can't remember.

to avoid the pre-flash you can get the IR3 which goes on the camera hotshoe and blocks the pre-flash.
