Default outdoor sports shots have me perplexed

was shooting outdoors yesterday, soccor game, using canon 5d, sigma 2x doubler and 70-200 canon 2.8. the problem, no matter what i did Tv, Av even in full Manual, I couldnt get the speed i was looking for, most shots had the legs and ball at such a blur, im thinking maybe this weekend I'll just shoot with the 70-200 without the 2x, the enlarge using photoshop, im afraid ill lose some quality, does anyone have any ideas that i might be able to try, like i said, it was a pretty clear day and bight sunny skys, yet i couldnt up the speed at all, the best i could get was 400 and that was disappointing. people are asking for shots yet i cant even begin to offer these to anyone, i hoping to get some valuable info. BTW, i love the weekly classes i get in my email, and i love this website, this is my first time in the forums.

What ISO were you shooting at?

Shouldn't have any problems shooting at 1/800 around F11 in those conditions (if using ISO 400)

I would have thought a 2x TC would have severely reduced the IQ. I don't use a TC at all.

I know that shooting sports during the day, even with fast glass and good light, you might need a higher ISO to get the shutterspeed you want.

For an intro to exposure see the first 3 pages here (it is a tute I wrote years ago):

Exposure

ISO is a measure of much light the sensor needs to record an image.

"The Sensor converts light into an electrical signal which can then be saved.
The sensitivity of the sensor can be adjusted so it needs less light to create the electrical signal.
The unit of measure for sensitivity in photography is the ISO.
In a Canon 350D (Rebel XT) the ISO values can be 100, 200, 400 , 800 and 1600.
Each value is double or half the sensitivity of adjacent value(s)
Increasing the ISO allows (1) Faster shutter speeds and/or (2) smaller apertures."

See page 60 of the English 5D instruction manual on how to adjust it.

Actually, going from f/2.8 to f/5.6 is halving your aperture. Bigger number means smaller opening. So you would have to slow your shutter down by 1 stop(one half).

ISO is the sensitivity rating of the cameras sensor. You can adjust it manually or set it to Auto. I wouldn't recommend Auto though. Look into your cameras menu & you will find your ISO setting. If you double it you will be able to double your shutter speed. For example, if you were getting a good exposure at f/5.6 with a shutter speed of 1/500th with ISO set at 200, you can adjust the ISO to 400 & get the same exposure at a shutter speed of 1/1000th. If you double the ISO again to 800 you get the same exposure with a shutter speed of 1/2000th. Remember though that raising the ISO rating will eventually introduce grain into the photo so you don't want to go to high. I would think that 800 would be no problem though in your situation.

Here's a good read for you.

Based on your description, you could be shooting with ISO 100, f/11, 1/400 (EV 15.6).

Assuming it was Exposure Value (EV) 15 on that clear and sunny day, you can shoot at 1/1600 @ f/5.6, ISO 200 (~EV 14.6).

I'm very surprised that you cannot set shutter speed in Manual mode even when the exposure may not be a correct one. Most likely you are not too familiar with your camera controls.
