I have been asked to do a shoot for the local soccer league this summer. The photos will all be outdoors in the evening with individual photos and team (+/-15 persons). I do not have any light source other than the on camera flash (Rebel XTI) and was wondering if this kit on Ebay would fit the need?

No. This set is tungsten which has a different color temperature than does daylight (by about 2500°K which is significant) and it requires a/c power and while 800 watts sounds powerful even a $55.00 cheapie plastic Chinese flash unit will overpower it by a whole bunch. Stick with flash.

Thanks for the input, Benji! I ended up buying a cheap set of strobes (EBAY ) as a starter kit instead.

I would love to know how you like these. I own about 10 of them that I mainly use for hair lights and I think they are a great little flash unit for the money. I suggest them frequently but most people seem to distrust me or them. Benji |

I'll keep you posted for sure. This was the only "cheap set" I could find any review on (all good) and figured it was worth the chance. Nice to hear it from you too! Now I'm a bit more confident with the purchase. Seeing as you own some of these, are replacement bulbs/flashes readily available for them or only through the ebay dealer? Are they compatible with other accessories from Bowens let's say?
This soccer shoot won't be until late June so I should have plenty of time to get accustomed to using them (I hope).

Benji,
Finally had a bit of time to play around with the sp160s. I am quite happy with the quality of the kit. Not having experience with any other flash or strobes I would have to say I made a good choice for the price. I have not found any willing test subjects yet so I had to test with some still life photography. Here is a sample of what I managed to get after a half dozen test shots to figure out the proper exposure.
