Default night time, street portraits

Hi
I'm realtively new to this whole digital photography thing. Hand me a manual and i'm fine but digital is a whole new world. I've been asked to photograph people attending a weekly music event, they want photos of the crowd and they want them standing outside on the street in front of a particular door! kind of like a style watch kind of thing. no the street is a busy quay with enough street light but i still reckon the pictures will be quite dark. Any tips on how to nail these would be greatly appreciated
Thanks in advance

some off camera flash should help. Here's a couple good examples for you with the info on how they took them: Flickr: Discussing Barcelona Street Studio: Open for critique in Strobist.com

If you look a little further down the comments he gives more detail on his lighting set up
