Hi all,
I'm thinking of picking up some basic portraiture equipment (extra SB-600 and an umbrella kit for lighting). I have a D90 so I'll be able to use CLS to remotely trigger the flashes. However, I was wondering if the on-camera flash will interfere with the lighting setup. In other words, will it give any harsh light to the subject, or will it be neutralized by the other flashes? Should I think about getting another type of remote trigger to avoid using the on-camera flash? Thanks.

You can set the onboard flash to "--" in the menus which allows the flash to fire to trigger the strobes but it does NOT affect exposure.

Osmosis, thanks. I'll have to reread the manual when I get home. As many times as I've looked through it, I don't remember that info at all (though that's not surprising).

The on board flash won't contribute to the exposure when set to "--" as described. However, the CLS control flash often causes the portrait subject to blink or react in a manor which can adversely effect the image. The SG-IR3 shield can be used to block the visible light and allowing only the infrared control flash to emit - thus minimizing any impact from the flash.
