You can't get it not to fire but if it is affecting your exposure, I usually use a card or something to cover mine up when needed. The power on the on board is set very low in commander mode but in certain instances it will have some impact on the shot.

Never it wasnt firing: I said it wasnt affecting exposure. It has to fire.

Thanks all. After fiddling around for a bit and experimentation, I managed to cover the flash enough to have it not affect my exposure but all the external flash to engage. Appreciate all you inputs.

I have to say, I use the SB-600 / D90 to shoot smoke, and I've never noticed the flash affecting the exposure when set to --. The only time I find it noticeable is if I'm shooting objects that reflect light (like glass), then I see it. I've yet to have a need to cover it...
