Talking 2 lights question

So a friend of mine loaned me a couple of spotlights and reflector umbrellas. I haven't used any kind of lighting setups before and was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on things I could shoot with this setup.

The lights are pretty old and while they flash they don't have any kind of connection that I can use with my Canon XSi. This would mean that I would have to only use the direct lighting sort of setup.

Any thoughts?

They are older, so they are continuous but have xenon flashes built in. You can push a button to make them flash.

you could shoot in dark conditions with a long shutter and smaller aperture. This will stop the ambient light from entering the image. Then during the shot, you press the button to flash. This will be the only light entering the image.

Good thought, and since I have two of them I could have light from two angles.
