Hi Community,
I've been asked by the manager of a club to do a certain shot of the entrance of his club with one guy doing fire breathing. Here is the whole thing: Expected result and initial setting: A person standing in the front of a building (a Club which has two entrences) and breathes fire upwards (symbolized by the golden reflectors above the person in the attached file). The three blue lights in the scribble are illumination for the building, the owner of the club wants the effect of the light (pointing upwards the building) to be visible in the shot. The colour could be changed to a single colour so there are no issues with the colour cycle the lights normally do. My Equipment: 1x Olympus E520 1x 14-42mm Kit Lens 1x Mecablitz 58 AF-1 Digital 1x Tripod 1x Lumiquest FX gel set My questions: 1) Would the setting I'm using (attached) be ok? The flashgun would be behind the photographer, pointing to the upper half of the building where the three lights are mounted, I would use a gel for the flash which has the same colour as the lights on the building. 2) Which colour to choose? Because of the red/orange/yellow tones of the fire breathing I think the best option would be blue in order to get a nice contrast. Am I right with this assumption? 3) Is it possible to take the shot at once or will I have to do one shot to get the whished effect of the building lightning and merge it with a shot of the fire breathing? 4) Do you have any other ideas which would be helpful or aspects I havn't tought of? I have some people who could help me with the set up, hold the people out of the shot etc. Thank your in advance for your tips, hints & critique! jcom |

you are probably gonna want another 3 speedlights for the shot. Plus gels for them. And stands to hold them. For the firebreather, you will probably want a softbox instead of an umbrella to avoid light spill onto the background. How are you tripping your lighting for the shot?
You could practice the shot with a torch at night. Have someone hold up something on fire (safety first) and see what you can do. I agree with the blue background. That would look good against the red/orange of the fire. edit: actually, you could go full CTO in the key on the subject and set the WB to tungsten, then the background would come out blue without gels.

Hi i speak in math,
thank you for your tips. Unfortunately it will take a while until I will be able to invest in some new equipment but I met a photographer yesterday who owns a company and probably I'm going to ask him if I might borrow some. Until then I have to stick to the small amount of equipment I have so far ![]() I set the Metz on slave which worked fine. I like the idea with the torch. I think I might repeat the shot when I have more and better equipment and also take your advice re WB and CTO into consideration. I'm going to upload the shot later on when I'm at home. Jcom |
